It's one of those pop culture flashbacks that the show does and has Chris Matthews and his giant head, talking over and interrupting his guest just like he does in real life. Special bonus: an appearance by someone from That 70s Show!

It's a show I often include in my What's On Tonight picks, but I just haven't caught up with it yet. From this recap/preview below, it looks like fun, sort of a weird Cartoon Network version of Survivor, with a few other reality shows mixed in too. The season finale airs this Thursday at 9PM.
For the most part, the basic cable network's upcoming slate of originals is what everyone expected, save for one fairly big surprise.
Full details and premiere dates after the jump.
Continue reading FX sets midseason schedule: Damages to Mondays, Nip/Tuck finale in March, and more

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Are you ready for some Martha Stewart?!

Filed under: Sports, Daytime, Celebrities, Reality-Free
If you're like me, when you hear the name Martha Stewart you think of football. Now those two things are coming together in a new contest.

Martha and NBC have teamed up for Martha's Sunday Night Football Sweepstakes, a contest where, if you win the grand prize, you get a trip to New York City, a stay in a hotel, $100 in spending money, and you get to attend a live taping of Martha Stewart or Football Night in America. Runner up prizes include Martha's new book Dinner at Home and autographed footballs.
Continue reading Are you ready for some Martha Stewart?!

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Why is ABC giving Nicole Richie a situation comedy?

Filed under: OpEd, Celebrities, Casting, Reality-Free, Cougar Town, Modern Family
If you don't count Hank -- and I'm trying to erase the two episodes I saw from my memory banks -- ABC has had a pretty good year launching new comedies. In fact, if you go back to the spring, you can add Better Off Ted to Cougar Town, The Middle and Modern Family.

Why then would ABC be giving Nicole Richie a new sitcom? I just don't see where she's worthy of a show, let alone that she has the star appeal or talent to carry a situation comedy.

Perhaps ABC has some take on The Simple Life star that I'm missing. She's cute, yes. She's not a complete airhead judging by what I've seen of her on talk shows. But, really, aren't there better actresses -- stars -- who are more viable for a new comedy series? Stars will more talent than celebrity to their credit.
Continue reading Why is ABC giving Nicole Richie a situation comedy?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Lie to Me - Fold Equity

Filed under: OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free, Lie to Me

(S02E09) "She's the female equivalent of roulette and you like the view." - Foster

There's always a potential for screw-ups when networks start airing episodes out of the producers intended order (see NBC and their goofs with Detective Crosetti's death in season three of Homicide), but Lie to Me seems to have avoided that sort of miscalculation despite FOX's shuffling of the season order. That is, until "Fold Equity" aired last night. Originally set to air during Fox's Simpsons week (catch the Sideshow Bob reference?), "Fold Equity" didn't drop the ball on anything as major as a character's death, but more than once during the hour it felt as though we were taking some giant steps backward.
Continue reading Review: Lie to Me - Fold Equity

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

There could be yet another permanent death coming up on Heroes

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Celebrities, Heroes, Casting, Reality-Free
So, in last night's episode of Heroes, one of the original cast members was killed off. In slow motion! Fans might think that there's a chance he could come back because characters come back on this show all the time, but producer Tim Kring says that this is final.

And now it looks like it might not be the only permanent death on the show.
Continue reading There could be yet another permanent death coming up on Heroes

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Peter Bergman celebrates 20 years on The Young and the Restless

Filed under: OpEd, Daytime, Video, Celebrities, Emmys, Reality-Free
Where has the time gone? Is it really 20 years that Peter Bergman's played Jack Abbott on The Young and the Restless? Amazing, but true. Not only has Bergman been tearing it up as Jack for two decades, he's pretty much eradicated the memory of his tenure on All My Children where he was nice guy, Dr. Cliff Warner. Say what you will about Jack, he's not a nice guy. He can have his good moments, but this character is too complicated, too selfish, too diabolical ever to be confused with a noble man like Cliff.
Which is what has made Peter Bergman's time on Y&R so remarkable! The character had been so sharply defined by Terry Lester that it was going to be tough for any actor to take over the part.
Continue reading Peter Bergman celebrates 20 years on The Young and the Restless

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

What's On Tonight: Presidential Address, Scrubs, Victoria's Secret, ECW

Filed under: Late Night, Programming, Celebrities, Talk Show, What To Watch Tonight, Reality-Free

I don't know how many people will miss TNT's Raising The Bar. It was one of those shows that you never really heard people talking about - fans or critics - even though it had a pretty high-profile cast, including Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Jane Kaczmarek. The 2008 premiere actually grabbed over 7.7 million viewers, but that number dropped 50% for the second season premiere, so the writing was on the wall.

TNT has canceled the legal drama. There are still a few episodes that haven't aired yet and they will probably be shown sometime in early 2010.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Bob's Burgers heading to Fox

Filed under: Programming, OpEd, Animation, Pickups and Renewals, Reality-Free
From the creator of Home Movies comes a new animated show on Fox. Bob's Burgers will be about a guy (Bob) who runs a burger grill at an East Coast seaside town with his "tightly wound wife and three unhelpful kids".

Fox is obviously returning to form with another animated family comedy, as if their entire Sunday night line-up weren't enough. I yearn for animated shows that dare to be a little different like South Park, Futurama and The Venture Bros.

However, the show involves hamburgers and as a hamburger fan I may give it a shot. It is a bit of a concern that Fox is overdoing it with the animated shows. Perhaps Cartoon Network and Fox should just switch names and be done with it.

Also, based on the photo doesn't the main character look a little like Luigi from the Mario Brothers? Will he have a thick Italian accent as well?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Review: Heroes - The Fifth Stage

Filed under: OpEd, Heroes, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S04E12) One of the comic books that I never expected to enjoy is Marvel's X-Factor. It used to be your typical spandex and fists adventure, but then it changed into a noir detective series, with mutants feature much more subdued powers. One of the best of these is Madrox, also known as Multiple Man. Upon impact of any kind, he splits into two beings, and then his doppelgangers retain this ability.

Why am I talking about a comic book character in a review about Heroes? Well, aside from the obvious connection, we got introduced to a new character this week. With Ray Park's Edgar gone from the Sullivan Bros. circus, Samuel turns to another denizen of the big top to step in and be his right-hand man, or right hands.
Continue reading Review: Heroes - The Fifth Stage

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Three Rivers will spend December on the shelf

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Programming, OpEd, Reality-Free
You knew it was a bad sign in November when CBS decided to flip flop Cold Case and Three Rivers to test whether it was the time slots that were dictating the sliding ratings of the Sunday night dramas.

The results were hardly conclusive, but consistently drawing less than 2.0 in the demographics has doomed Three Rivers. CBS has pulled Three Rivers off the schedule for December. Merry Christmas, Alex O'Loughlin lovers.

This is the first step to cancellation and anyone who tells you otherwise is blowing smoke. Despite a big star in the center, Three Rivers is an earnest medical drama that's just not catching on with viewers. CBS will complete the 13-episode order and then kiss the show bye-bye.
Continue reading Three Rivers will spend December on the shelf

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Here's the new promo for Lost (from Spain)

We aren't getting too many promos for the last season of Lost from ABC (and zero new footage), but this promo from Spain is pretty damn cool. (S03E11) It's Thanksgiving time on the Upper East Side, and you know what that means? Loads of drama and awkward situations. This special episode also marks the return of a few of the show's mothers, including Jessica's mother, Blair's mother, and Lily's mother CeCe.

Sadly, due to a prior engagement, I will not be able to offer you a full review of the episode in due time. Please take a few minutes to post your reactions to the episodes in the comments section below. In my review of the December 7 episode, I'll post my comments about "The Treasure of Serena Madre" and may include a few of your own comments.

So don't be shy. Let the other TV Squad readers know what you thought of this week's episode. What did you think of all the mother drama? Sure, more often than not, House can get stale -- it's the same thing, week in and out, and even something shocking (like Kutner offing himself last year or Cameron saying good-bye two weeks ago) isn't enough to take away from the fact that it's just another episode with another wacky case. But episodes like "Broken", and now "Wilson," are proof that there are so many more layers that need exploring in the world of Princeton Plainsboro.
Continue reading Review: House - Wilson

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Producers Guild names noms; do you care?

Usually just covering the Emmys is enough to make me want to take a week long nap. But now TV shows are getting more nominations and awards than most Nobel Peace Prize Winners.

It's not just the Emmys. We've got the Golden Globes, the People's Choice Awards, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Peabody Awards, the ALMA Awards, the E Pluribus Unum Awards. It's good to know that at least America's cabinet makers will never suffer a major economic recession.

Now the Producers Guild has announced the list of nominations for their awards and they are almost identical to the Emmys. Mad Men, 30 Rock, Breaking Bad, Dexter; they're all there. Why not just show a rerun of the last Emmy Awards and everyone can turn in early?

Does anybody care about all these trinket tossers?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

First "Spill" O'Reilly, then ... who?

There are a few definitive signs that you have become an icon in television news: getting a blog dedicated solely to your ties, winning an "Auto-Tune the News" award, and bringing the world the hilarious tale of an exploding whale.

Last week, Fox News' "No Spin" pundit Bill O'Reilly was cemented into fame when Sesame Street unveiled their "Spill O'Reilly," the newest talking head on the "Grouch News Network" that includes such greats as Walter Cranky, Dan Rather-not and Sally Messy Yuckayel.

This got me thinking...
Just ask TV reporter Paul Linnman who since the dawn of the Internet has been dubbed as the "exploding whale guy."

He's covered all sorts of amazing stories, people and moments around the world, but his most famous story is one of a beached whale that Oregon Department of Transportation officials tried to blow up with a ton of dynamite.

Still, Linnman was nice enough to sit down with me and discuss that infamous day in TV history when the blubber hit the fan (as well as the cameras, a flattened car and about 75 onlookers) for an interview at Asylum.com.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Watch some classic Doctor Who on YouTube

Filed under: OpEd, Doctor Who, Reality-Free

Doctor Who fans can once again rejoice. Episodes of the classic series are now available on YouTube. These are officially sanctioned by the BBC, so there's no piracy in this instance.

In this case, it's a selection of a single episode from four of the ten existing Doctors. There is The Edge of Destruction with William Hartnell, The Krotons with Patrick Troughton, Carnival of Monsters with Jon Pertwee and The Caves of Androzani and The Twin Dilemma with Peter Davison and Colin Baker, respectively.

Classic episodes have been available online before. Netflix had a few in their library for subscribers. This is the first instance I recall in which the episodes are available to anybody in the world at any time.

I note that a bunch of the available stories are written by the fantastic Doctor Who scribe Robert Holmes. This guarantees quality writing to compensate for the poor special effects of the era. Enjoy!

Permalink | Email this | | Comments
